Best Tips on Lip Filler Aftercare

Thinking about plumping your pout, but not sure what to expect when it comes to plastic surgery and proper aftercare for your fillers? We’ve got you covered! Emergency Fix is here to walk you through everything botox and filler related to make sure you have the best experience possible.

What can I expect after my lip filler appointment?

Getting lip fillers is a relatively quick and painless procedure, lasting around 15 to 20 minutes on average. Since the process is so quick, we want to make sure you take the appropriate steps to care for your treatment once you’ve left the office. To begin, we’re going to go over the common side-effects that are experienced following your filler appointment.

You may notice some swelling around the injection site

As a result of trauma (a needle being inserted into the skin) the body will begin to protect itself by swelling. Unfortunately, swelling following any lip injection is expected and cannot be avoided, but should resolve itself within a day or so. If you want to avoid any additional strain or trauma, try to leave the injection site alone and gently apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

Bruising might appear within the first few days after your session

Bruising is likely to occur any time there is trauma to the skin as it is a direct result of blood vessels being broken and the residual blood spreading under the surface of the skin. While bruising is not guaranteed to happen during your filler appointment, it is a possibility for some.

In the event bruising occurs, do not panic. Simply avoid blood thinners and unnecessary physical activity. The discoloration should diminish on its own within a day or two.

You might experience some pain and redness which is totally normal

For most individuals, there is a common side effect of tenderness and redness around any area that has been penetrated by a needle. Whether you’re getting blood drawn, a tattoo, a piercing, or fillers, it is completely normal to experience heightened sensitivity around the area.

Additionally, it is important to note that stress in a certain area can trigger the presence of a cold sore. While cold sores after a filler treatment is uncommon, this can happen and is completely normal.

Things to keep in mind after your appointment

Besides what to expect, there are basic things to be mindful of following your appointment. In our experience, these steps are important to know so that you make the best out of your new fillers.

How can you keep swelling down after your lip filler injections?

You can manage swelling following your appointment in a few different ways. Firstly, you’re going to want to give your lips as much rest as possible in order to avoid irritation. Additionally, avoiding NSAIDs, Vitamin E, Fish Oil supplements, anticoagulants, and green tea will help reduce the likelihood of swelling. If you’re not sure if your medication will play a role in adding to the swelling your lips incur, speak with your physician.

Avoid any trauma to the lips

Avoiding trauma is more than just avoiding activities that will hurt your face. In the realm of lip injections, trauma can translate to anything that puts additional strain on your lips. For example, try brushing your teeth gently and avoid using straws or water bottles that require suction to extract your drink.

Can I eat after my lip injection appointment?

Absolutely! Eating should not interfere with your recent procedure. Just keep in mind: in the event your lips were numbed during the injection process, try to wait until the numbness has worn off. Eating when your lips are still a little numb can result in trauma and unnecessary damage.

What should I add or avoid my appointment?

Following your appointment, here are our top recommendations for healing. Follow these simple aftercare tips and you’re sure to love the results.

Skip out on strenuous exercises after your lip filler injection

While exercise is great for your personal health and wellbeing, it is not beneficial for your new injections. Adding unnecessary strain and excessive sweat and blood flow will do nothing but further irritate your lips. Do yourself a favor: for best results, avoid any strenuous activity for at least three days following your appointment.

Apply ice to your lips after your session

As mentioned before, applying ice to the affected area is a great way to assist your body's natural healing reaction. Not only will ice reduce any potential swelling, but it can also help calm any pain or discomfort without the use of blood thinning pain medications.

Sleep on your back to avoid pushing your lips into your pillow

Sorry stomach sleepers, but it’s pretty important following your appointment to sleep on your back. Laying on your stomach on your side can result in unexpected pressure on your lips, creating a painful or irritating reaction for you to deal with in the morning. Do yourself a favor and try to reduce that risk by sleeping on your back.
